The bids will be for masonry, retaining structures and grade beam at the field on Sandford Boulevard and Garden Street. Thus far, the city doesn't know the cost of the project.
Memorial Field, which opened in the 1930s, has been the site of football games and graduation ceremonies in the past. But it has deteriorated and is not used. The city had a plan under former Mayor Clinton Young to reconstruct Memorial Field. But when Mayor Ernie Davis came back into office in 2011, a decision was made to renovate it instead.
It is important that Memorial Field be renovated, said Councilwoman Deborah Reynolds, who serves as the chairman of recreation.
"We've been waiting too long," Reynolds said. "The community needs a place to go as an outlet. I hope the job gets done correctly since we are asking residents for money to pay for this."
Memorial Field has become a "blighted eyesore" and needs to be restored to it former glory, Councilman Richard Thomas said.
"The benefit would be to young people specifically who would have a place to go for outdoor activities," Thomas said."
