MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. Mount Vernon resident Hank Miller is upset by the lack of response by the city in cleaning up debris from a car that burned a week ago in front of his home on North 10th Street at the intersection of Stevens Avenue.
Miller said a Lexus burned Sunday afternoon. By Tuesday the shell of the vehicle was removed from the location, but debris including metal, glass, rubber, plastic and even the plastic Lexus logo previously on the back of the vehicle remained on the sidewalk. Also, parts on the vehicle remained burned into the pavement. Miller said he saw a street sweeper go over the site Wednesday morning, but most of the debris remained either on or burned into the street. On Friday morning, the debris was still not cleaned up.
The city needs to live up to its responsibility to deliver services and respond to requests like this, Miller said. This is typical of their unresponsiveness, and that breeds apathy among city residents. In turn, citizen apathy just encourages the city to not uphold its responsibilities. Until the people demand better, we wont get it.
Councilman Richard Thomas said the city is working to clean up the debris. Thomas said that instances like this one are why he proposed a beautification ordinance at the last City Council meeting.
This is what I meant when I proposed it, Thomas said. We have to listen to the residents and clean up the city.
