MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – County Legislator Lyndon Williams says his Democratic colleagues didn’t “walk out” on the budget that was passed by seven Republicans and two Democrats on Friday.

Williams, who represents Mount Vernon, said the Democrats left because the meeting was adjourned. He said he and his colleagues asked County Executive Rob Astorino for revised copies of the budget that excluded “patronage jobs.” Williams said that Astorino, a Republican, cut professional county workers to make room for jobs for his colleagues

“The so-called budget they voted on today contained $6 million of political patronage jobs that Astorino placed in the budget for his campaign next year,” Williams said Friday. “They include the chairman of the Conservative Party, the vice-chair of the Mount Vernon Conservative Party and Astorino’s campaign treasurer.”

Williams said Astorino could find the money for “patronage jobs” but could not find it for child care, community health centers, immigration services, youth programs and senior citizen programs.

Democratic County Legislators Michael Kaplowitz and Virginia Perez sided with the Republicans to pass the 2013 county budget. Williams said it is “disgraceful” and said that Perez “sold out” her constituents in Southwest Yonkers.

“The residents of her district depend on child care subsidies so that they could work, and many of her constituents depend on the Yonkers Health Center as the only means for preventative health care services,” Williams said. “My Democrat colleagues are persons of integrity and principle. We will not sell out the poor and middle class for personal benefits.”
