MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. The Westchester Presidential Debate Watch series begins Wednesday night in Mount Vernon as the first of three debates between President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney hits the airwaves from Denver.
The debate watch is a nonpartisan activity meant to give Westchester residents a chance to get together to hear what both presidential candidates have to say. A press release by Kensworth Consulting, which is hosting the debate watch, said more than 200 people are expected to attend, including the Rev. Richard Dixon, a friend of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Dixon will turn 89 on Wednesday. He traveled with King to Oslo, Norway, in 1964 when King received the Nobel Peace Prize.
We are honored that Rev. Dixon has chosen to spend his evening with our group to watch the presidential debate as the context of his personal and historical involvement is taken into consideration, said Steven Horton, one of the events organizers.
The event will begin at 7 p.m. at Hollywood Hot, 159 Gramatan Ave. in downtown Mount Vernon, with a pre-debate discussion featuring panelists including Westchester County Legislator Lyndon Williams (D-Mount Vernon) and Republican strategist Tanya Guinevere Hunte. New York state Sen. Ruth Hassell-Thompson (D-Mount Vernon) will serve as the moderator.
The presidential debate begins at 9 p.m. and will be followed by a discussion at 10:30 p.m. when it is over. The Westchester Presidential Debate Watch continues on Oct. 16 at a location to be determined and concludes on Oct. 22 at Iona College in New Rochelle. The election is Nov. 6.
