Mount Vernon Hoping To Open Public Access Channel

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Mount Vernon resident Geoff Munroe and at least one City Council member agree: the city should get a municipal public access television station up and running as soon as possible.

Munroe said the station fits into the public education and governmental structure of Mount Vernon, adding that he has been in conversations with Council members Richard Thomas and J. Yuhanna Edwards about the matter.

“There are many opportunities being missed since we don’t have a public access channel,” Munroe said. “This is a way to contribute from one person to the other. A community needs social and political information being passed along.”

Thomas said Mount Vernon needs a public access channel and is stepping up the advocacy to get one. He said that a free public access channel in the city is overdue in this age of technology.

“We owe it to the community,” Thomas said.

Munroe said that a public access channel would also benefit the youth of the city, adding that it can help train them in potential careers.

“This would give voice to their concerns,” Munroe said. “It’s a very basic service. Some might say it’s irrelevant to have one in this age of the Internet, but it is still a useful resource. I know there are greater priorities in this city, but this is an issue that is not worth ignoring."
