MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – A public hearing will be held Thursday at Holmes Elementary School, 195 N. Columbus Ave., about a homeless shelter opening in the neighborhood.
Westchester County contracted the Friendship Worship Center, 261 E. Lincoln Ave., to become a homeless shelter, but residents in the area voiced concerns.
County Legislator Lyndon Williams, who represents Mount Vernon, is proposing to use the site for youth initiatives and move the homeless shelter to the vacant WestHELP property in Greenburgh, which has 108 units.
"Addressing the homeless problem is a County obligation that requires a comprehensive long-term, county-wide solution, not a patchwork of fixes in which the homeless population is targeted for tolerant communities like Mount Vernon," Williams said in a letter to County Executive Rob Astorino. "Moreover, many of the homeless persons are in need on mental health services, and yet your administration has closed the County’s mental health clinics that provided such services to this vulnerable population."
The public hearing begins at 7 p.m.
