Mount Vernon Happy With Obama Debate Peformance

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Mount Vernon residents were pleased Tuesday night with President Barack Obama’s performance at the second presidential debate against Mitt Romney, saying it was the “president they know” coming out for round two.

Resident Edith Washington Charles said Obama was tough on his points to the questions that were posed to him, adding that the president was more focused this time around than during the first debate. Resident Robin Douglas, president of the African American Chamber of Commerce of Rockland and Westchester counties, said that Obama won the debate because he stuck to the points he made and that Romney didn’t answer a question when asked three or four times.

“Obama was on point and he stayed with his message,” Douglas said. “He stayed with the facts and let Romney know that he wasn’t going to overpower him. In the first debate Obama just answered the questions but didn’t have the body language. Tonight he brought it as the commander-in-chief and the human being that I’ve been following the past four years.”

Resident Patricia Monahan said she was disappointed with Obama in the first debate because he didn’t have the energy she saw this time around. Monahan said that Romney brought up different issues than he is running on and she said Obama spoke with more knowledge in the second debate and was more convincing.

Both residents Jen Wiggins and Mary Graves said the first debate was part of Obama’s strategy. Graves said she’s been following Obama for four years, adding that tonight he was strong and precise.

“Obama related to the question asked to him and was consistent,” Graves said. “Romney was not consistent with what he said over the last two weeks. It’s hard to follow Romney because Obama is consistent.”
