Mount Vernon Defends Recreation Official's 32 Percent Pay Raise

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- A Mount Vernon recreation official’s 32 percent raise was justified, long overdue and has nothing to do with her state pension, city officials said this week, according to a report by lohud.com.

Diane Atkins, who has worked at Mount Vernon's deputy commissioner of recreation, recently got a 32 percent raise, which city officials called well-deserved and long overdue. Combined with her state pension, she now makes more than $200,000 a year.

Diane Atkins, who retired six years ago as Westchester’s deputy commissioner of social services, had been making about $68,000 a year since she was hired in 2012 as Mount Vernon’s deputy recreation commissioner, the lohud.com report said.

The city, which has been moving to increase executive pay, especially for women who have apparently been shortchanged, will pay Atkins $90,000 a year, lohud.com reported.

What may be raising a few eyebrows is Atkins' $123,519 pension, a fact which has been dismissed as irrelevant by Council President Marcus Griffith and Comptroller Maureen Walker, the lohud.com story said.
