The ballot is set to be crowded, with five candidates – incumbent Mayor Ernest Davis, former Mayor Clinton Young, Comptroller Maureen Walker, City Councilman Richard Thomas and Sen. Ruth Hassell-Thompson – vying for support in the Democratic mayoral primary.

A sixth potential candidate, Councilwoman Deborah Reynolds, was originally planning to run in the primary, but was dropped off the ballot due to a paperwork snafu. She will still run in the general election, on the Conservative Line.

It’s been a contentious run to the primary, with members of several campaigns lobbing complaints and claims at their competitors in the days and weeks leading up to the decisive day on Thursday, which will go a long way to ultimately deciding the future of Mount Vernon, as the city of nearly 70,000 has a majority of Democratic voters.

Leading up to this week’s primary, several topics have come up in a series of debates, including the city’s struggling school district, crumbling infrastructure and Memorial Field, which has been closed for the better part of a decade, forcing Westchester County to cut off funding for a renovation.
