I am Cheryl, an independent running for Mount Vernon City Council. I am not affiliated with the Republican, Democratic, Democratic Independent parties or any other organized political party.

I was born in England to Jamaican parents and have lived 28 years in New York state, calling Mount Vernon home since 2011. I am also an active member of Mount Vernon’s Oneness Rehoboth Apostolic Church for the past 12 years, serving our community.

I am an executive director for a senior citizen supportive housing organization. I hold a master's of public administration degree from Pace University and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from CUNY City College.

I have 15 years of leadership experience working in government and nonprofit entities. I have built a successful career in the delivery of quality social services with dignity and respect. In collaboration with New York state Corrections and Community Supervision, I teach anger management skills to Mount Vernon parolees (returning citizens) to prevent their return to prison and support their successful re-entry into our community. I provide strong advocacy to seniors, the poor and any individual or group who experience injustices.

The following is a summary of my vision for the City of Mount Vernon:

  • Pro-jobs, pro-accountability, pro-community.
  • Create specialized training for young adults and returning citizens.
  • Grow small businesses, welcome big businesses.
  • Create jobs.
  • Make it easier for residents to view the status of projects.
  • Raise revenue, cut costs and collect unpaid taxes.
  • Present information in a simple and clear format.
  • Increase homeownership and decrease property taxes.
  • Complete the rebuilding of Memorial Field.
  • Improve the delivery of city services.

Independents don’t participate in the primaries. Your vote on Nov. 3, in the general election, is crucial, as it will impact the future of Mount Vernon.

Beyond party lines, our city needs someone with passion, leadership and vision. A vote for me is a vote for someone who will address this city’s issues. I am your Councilwoman.
