Shortly before 7 a.m. firefighters reported to the wholesale bakery after receiving reports that flames were billowing through the roof. Hours after the fire sparked, reportedly from the boiler room, smoke could still be seen punctuating the clear blue sky as members of the FDNY and Mount Vernon Fire Department continued dousing the building with water.

None of the employees in the bakery – which supplies Artuso retail locations in Mamaroneck and the Bronx with Italian pastries – were injured. A pair of firefighters were treated locally for minor injuries. The fire did not spread to any of the nearby establishments in the heavily commercial district.

Officials from Con Edison were also on scene after turning off power in the area between South 10th and 13th Avenues for several hours. Officials with Artuso’s were on scene watching the fire, but declined comment.

According to reports, the fire may have started in a boiler room at the bakery before quickly spreading to the rest of the building, though the investigation into the cause is ongoing. The roof of the building was partially collapsed, and the fire gutted most of the building, leaving its future uncertain.

“When we woke up this morning, the entire street was just loaded with smoke, we had no idea what was going on,” Missy Davis, who lives nearby, said on Monday. “It looks bad, but the important thing is that everyone is alright. Things can be replaced.”
