State Police Charge 198 With DWI During July 4 Crackdown

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – State police arrested 198 people for DWI during a statewide crackdown on impaired or distracted drivers during the July 4 holiday weekend, according to New York State Police.

Troopers conducted sobriety checkpoints where more than 12,885 vehicles passed through. 

The enforcement began Friday, July 3 and continued through Monday, July 6. State police issued 10,759 tickets during the campaign and targeted impaired drivers and distracted driving, speeding, move over violations and motorists who were not using their seatbelts. Of the tickets issued, 4,523 were for speeding, 621 were for child restraint and seatbelt violations, 186 were for move over tickets and 310 were for distracted driving.

Troopers investigated 722 accidents, compared to 661 in 2014. In these crashes, 198 people were injured, and two people were killed.
