A reward of up to $2,500 has been offered to anyone who  comes forward with information that leads to an arrest and conviction. Information can be anonymously phoned into the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-866-313-8477.

Major Case detectives are still actively investigating the case of the 85-year-old Gruber, who was found dead in her basement on Feb. 12. According to police, she may have been killed after walking in on burglars attempting to steal her water meter to resell the copper inside.

Mount Vernon came together over the weekend to mourn Gruber, with a march from Greater Centennial AME Zion Church to South Sixth Avenue, where she lived. Weeks after her death, nearby neighbors remained unsettled.

“There has to be a limit. She was a great lady who wouldn’t swat a fly if it was on her wall, she’d try to lead it out the window,” Laurie McDonald, 33, said. “It really makes you wonder and worry about the types of people that would do something like this.”

Suspects have been interviewed by police, but no leads have led to an arrest thus far. Police officials note that any information, no matter how big or small it may seem, can be the difference in a suspect going free or being charged.

“Anything we can get helps the detectives,” an officer said on Thursday. “Sometimes it’s the smallest things that can lead to a suspect being caught.”
