Westchester County Police are investigating what the substance was that resulted in the hospitalizations and how it came into the possession of the inmates, O'Leary said.

The incident started at 2:51 p.m. Sunday when an inmate at the jail was in medical distress, O'Leary said. Help was provided by corrections officers.

In a short period of time, five other inmates showed similar symptoms of a possible drug overdose.

Corrections officers called for ambulances to take the prisoners to local hospitals.

Four prisoners went to the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla and two were taken to White Plains Hospital.

Corrections officers maintained custody of the inmates at all times, riding in the ambulances with them and staying  in the hospital.
