MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – For the second time in less than five months, a suspect was apprehended by Mount Vernon police after a man was gunned down at the Levister Towers affordable housing apartment complex.

Phillip Copeland, a resident of the affordable apartment complex was arrested by police shortly before midnight on Friday after a swift investigation into a shooting that left a man dead.

According to officials, officers reviewed security camera tapes shortly after the shooting, drew up a description of the suspect and quickly made an arrest in the building.

The suspect’s identity was withheld publicly while the investigation continued. A weapon was also recovered by police.

Copeland, 28, has been charged with a felony charge of criminal possession of a weapon, but those charges are expected to be elevated following further investigation.

“It’s a little scary that it keeps happening, but you have to praise the police for bringing in the bad guys,” Jolene Rodriguez, who lives near the West Third Street complex, said on Monday afternoon. “

Earlier this year, Dontan Jenkins , a Mount Vernon security guard for the company that protects Levister Towers, gunned down his co-worker outside the complex. Jenkins is facing life in prison after being charged with felony counts of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

In May, former Mount Vernon High School and current Oklahoma University basketball standout Isaiah Cousins was struck by a stray bullet near the complex when a gang fight broke out nearby.
