Pedestrian Struck, Killed By Car In New Rochelle ID'd

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The pedestrian struck and killed by a car in New Rochelle on Thursday night has been identified as Bronx resident Richard Mason.

According to the Westchester County Medical Examiner’s Office, Mason, 57, was killed when he was struck shortly before 8:30 p.m. on Thursday night at the intersection of Pelham Road and Leland Avenue.

Pelham Road was closed in both directions on Thursday night while police investigated the accident. The investigation is ongoing; no one has been placed in custody in regards to the accident.

Jim Killoran, the CEO of nearby Habitat for Humanity of Westchester will lead a prayer vigil for Mason at 8 p.m. on Friday night at the scene of the crash. A petition will be passed around, urging for "safer streets in New Rochelle concerning pedestrian rights." 

"The disregard for pedestrian safety is at an all-time high," he said. "Changes must be made. There needs to be zero tolerance for unsafe roads highly trafficked by on-foot civilians."
