One Dead, One Injured In Mount Vernon Shooting

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. - A 48-year old man from the Bronx was shot and killed early Friday morning and another man injured in a shooting outside of Mums Lounge.

Police said the 48-year old man, whose name has not been released was shot in the head while a 54-year old man was shot in the elbow and was taken to Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. The shooting occurred at 3:40 a.m. outside Mums, located at 244 W. First St.

The shooting comes three days after three men and one woman were shot outside of Garden Bar, located at 766 S. Fifth Ave. At least two victims remained in the hospital from the Tuesday shooting.

Mayor Ernie Davis said in a press release after the first shooting that police will "vigorously monitor" nighttime activity involving alcohol and guns, which he called a "lethal combination."

"Mount Vernon bears the burden of overcoming negative publicity," Davis said. "We’re calling on the community to help us monitor these types of activities so that we can prevent possible tragic outcomes that erode at our quality of life."

City Council member Richard Thomas said the shootings are "unacceptable" and the city needs to do more to keep illegal handguns out of the community. Thomas said the city needs to reinstate the "SNUG" program, similar to the one in Yonkers, which targets gang violence. SNUG is guns spelled backwards.

"My committee is calling on our federal, state and county officials to step up resources to assist Mount Vernon’s law enforcement," Thomas said. "This includes money for “SNUG” as well as supplying technology such as traffic cameras and license plate readers to track down perpetrators and bring them to justice. Every resident deserves and demands a safe community."
