DNA tests from evidence gathered from a second cabin the two are believed to have stayed came back positive.
The cabin, in which signs of intrusion were found, is in Malone, N.Y., about 38 miles north of the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, where the two escaped from on June 6 and about 14 miles north of Mountain View, the location of the other cabin where police collected boots and bloody socks and in which DNA tests came up as a match.
Malone, N.Y., is located about 30 miles south of the Canadian border and the Cornwall, Ontario, area.
On Thursday, law enforcement officers continued to comb recreational trails in the region in their search for the now 49-year-old Matt and 34-year-old Sweat, inspect seasonal camps, and conduct ground searches of forested areas.
Checkpoints are also continuing.
More than 1,100 law enforcement officers from state, federal and local agencies are involved in this effort. These agencies include Forest Rangers and Conservation Officers from the Department of Environmental Conservation, officers from the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Plattsburgh Police, Vermont State Police, and the Clinton, Franklin and Washington County Sheriff’s Departments.
All available assets are being deployed around the clock, including canine and aviation units.
The investigation of the escape to this point has yielded more than 2,400 leads. State Police said they have dozens of investigators working behind the scenes to gather information on each lead.
