Irema Johnson, 31, left two pit bulls and a kitten in her apartment with neither food nor water for more than two months. She left her apartment to deal with a family crisis on Feb. 11 and never returned.

The carcasses of the dead animals, each of which were less than one year old, were not found until April 27, members of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Westchester (SPCA) said.

On Tuesday, Johnson was charged with three counts of animal cruelty. She was arraigned in Mount Vernon and faces up to a year in prison on each count if she is found guilty.
