Last month, Damaiano told the department his gun was missing. It was believed the gun had been mistakenly taken from the department’s locker room. The gun has yet to be recovered.
This type of mistake is intolerable, Deputy Commissioner Richard Burke said.
“It is unacceptable that the officer failed to safeguard his weapon,” he said in a statement. “The officer has agreed to disciplinary action without the necessity of a department trial.”
Damaiano has been a member of the police department for less than two years after serving in the military for more than two decades. It is uncertain what disciplinary actions the department has taken against him.
“Although the internal investigation has concluded, the department will continue to investigate the theft and follow up any leads or information that may become available,” Burke added.
