MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. - A Manhattan man has been arrested for his suspected role in a city shooting last week .

On Monday, Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas and acting Police Commissioner Ron Fatigate announced that Bobby Jackson has been arrested in connected to a shooting near the intersection of Third Street and Second Avenue that took the life of a 42-year-old man.

Jackson has been charged with second-degree murder and faces up to 25 years in prison.

In a statement, Thomas commended the detectives and police department for swiftly apprehending their suspect following an intensive investigation.

"I commend the hard-working men and women of the Mount Vernon Police Department for their swift action in making an arrest in the senseless murder of Charles Smith. Special thanks go out to our skilled police officers who conducted a thorough investigation and, once again, showed how critical they are to keeping our streets safe,” he said.

"It is our prayer that the family and friends of Mr. Smith can take solace in the commitment of our police department to remain vigilant and deliver justice. Our community stands with the Smith family in their time of grief we are working to end gun violence in our city."

Following the shooting last weekend, Thomas stated that this type of violent crime will not be tolerated in the city much longer.

"Those who choose to engage in a life of crime will not run our streets,” he said. “We are dedicated to strengthening public safety and look forward to developing a coalition of law enforcement and non-profit agencies to assist in the effort to create a safer Mount Vernon.”
