Mount Vernon Parolee Arrested In Midday Deli Shooting

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Mount Vernon detectives have identified and arrested a suspect in the brazen midday shooting that took place at the Top Deli Market earlier this month.

Juan Picart, a Mount Vernon native, was arrested late on Monday night in coordination to the June 1 shooting, when he chased his victim into the East Third Street deli and shot him several times.

At approximately 4 p.m. on Monday, June 1, the 28-year-old man was chased into the Top Deli Market on East Third Street by Picart and shot multiple times in in the arms and abdomen in broad daylight. The victim was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in critical condition and underwent several hours of surgery to treat the gunshot wounds, while Picart fled until authorities apprehended him on Monday.

The victim survived the gunshot wounds, though the motive for the shooting remains unclear. According to reports, Picart had two previous run-ins with the law, including an attempted robbery and weapons charge. He was on parole for the criminal possession of a weapon charge at the time of the shooting.

Picart, 25, has been charged with felony counts of attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned at Mount Vernon City Court on Tuesday.
