MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – The Mount Vernon Office for the Aging is warning city residents about a suspect who is using a phone scam in an attempt to swindle people out of their money.
According to the Office for the Aging, there have been reports of phone calls made by a man informing the person on the other end that a friend has purchased a free medical alert system for them.
The man then advises the person answering the phone that he would like to set up a time for someone to come install the equipment at their home. The scam appears to be statewide, and several cases have been reported in Westchester County.
“This is a scam, and you should hang up immediately,” the office warned. “Do not let anyone come into your home to install anything if you, or a family member did not personally purchase the equipment.”
