The Westchester County District Attorney's Office said that on Aug. 3, Gilzeane initially told the emergency room staff at Mount Vernon Hospital that she had suffered a miscarriage, but she had actually delivered a full-term baby. Gilzeane told the hospital staff that she had placed the infant in a plastic bag, sealed it and left it in the bathroom of her residence at 8-10 N. Ninth Ave., the District Attorney's Office said.
Police officers went to the apartment and found a lifeless body in a plastic bag. An investigation determined that the baby had been born alive and that Gilzeane had not received any prenatal care, the District Attorney's Office said.
“The real tragedy here is that with all the resources that are available in Westchester County to help and support expectant mothers and mothers of newborns, this defendant chose the worst possible outcome,” said District Attorney Janet DiFiore. “Regardless of the challenges that this defendant may have faced, she now will be held accountable for her inexcusable actions.”
Gilzeane was ordered held without bail and is due back in court Dec. 18. She faces 25 years to life in state prison.
