MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. Mount Vernon resident Gilbert Carrero has been charged with driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, both misdemeanors, police report.
Dispatch got a call of a hit and run at the intersection of S. 4th Avenue and Sandford Boulevard Thursday at 10:26 p.m., according to Sgt. Robert Scott. Responding officers spoke with a woman who said she was hit by a red Ford station wagon. The woman, who was not injured, said the vehicle headed south on South 4th.
Officers searched the area and found a vehicle meeting the womans description at the intersection of S. 3rd Avenue and Sandford Boulevard. Scott said it had scuffs on the side and a broken driver's side mirror. He said officers smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from Carrero, 57, who was also slurring his speech. Carrero failed field sobriety tests and was arrested, Scott said.
