MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – A Mount Vernon student was arrested on Thursday after allegedly assaulting a classmate at Nellie A. Thornton High School.

According to reports, a 15-year-old student at the high school was in a stairwell, where a classmate ripped at her hair and kicked her, sending her to the hospital, where she was treated for injuries.

Both the victim and her attacker were suspended from school for a week for fighting.

Police arrested the suspect after viewing a video of the incident that was recorded on a cell phone. In a statement, the district confirmed that it is looking further into the matter.

“This is an unfortunate incident involving our students. The school district is taking this matter very seriously. We are investigating the facts leading up to the incident and carefully reviewing the cell phone video taken from the scene in cooperation with the police.”

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. It happens far more often than the news media reports. The Mount Vernon School District is a horror and is criminally negligent in its responsibility to protect students.
