Passenger Kevin Shaw, 26, a former Concordia College assistant basketball coach and Fairfield University player, and driver Allashun Clay, 27, were the two victims in Wednesday’s incident when they were reportedly “targeted” by a suspect who is now being investigated for a double homicide by Mount Vernon and Westchester County police.

Shortly before 5 a.m. on Wednesday, a BMW convertible struck a parked SUV on East Third Street in Mount Vernon near the end of an exit ramp on the Hutchinson River Parkway, flipping several times before coming to a rest, several feet away, on its roof.

According to Mount Vernon Police Commissioner Terrance Raynor, both victims in the fatal accident suffered at least one gunshot wound in their “upper extremity.” It has not been determined if the gunshots or the impact of the accident was the cause of the victims’ deaths.

“We don’t know if the individuals were killed as a result of the gunshot wounds they sustained or if the accident killed them,” he said Thursday. “Whether they were shot and continued driving on Third Street, or were shot right before the crash, is to be determined.”

On Twitter, Concordia College Head Coach Brian Sondey mourned the loss of his former assistant, who coached with him in the 2010-2011 season. No motives for the shooting have been announced and no arrests have been made.

“Kevin Shaw was the first assistant to join me and believe in our vision for #clippernation,” he wrote. “Kevin we’ll miss you dearly. #RipKevShaw.”

Shaw, who lived in the Bronx, played high school basketball at Rice High School in Manhattan.

In a joint statement, Concordia College officials mourned the loss of their former assistant, adding, “All of us at Concordia College are saddened by the news of Mr. Shaw’s passing. He served as a part-time assistant basketball coach here for one season and left to pursue graduate studies.”
