According to the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office, Carl “Leakumns” Ragland, 35, faces life in prison after a jury found him guilty of one felony count of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and a misdemeanor count of resisting arrest.
Due to his violent past, Ragland was sentenced as a discretionary persistent felony offender, which led to a longer sentence.
On June 18 last year at OK Freddy’s, Ragland got into a heated argument with his eventual victim, a female, while ordering drinks at the bar. He subsequently left the bar to hide inside a South Ninth Avenue residence with the intention of approaching his victim.
When his victim later left the bar, Ragland pulled out a handgun, shooting her in the chest. She staggered across the street to call for an ambulance, prompting Mount Vernon police to respond to the scene.
The victim was taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where she provided a description of Ragland, leading to his capture.
Two days after the shooting, Ragland was found hiding in a closet in New Rochelle. He initially resisted arrest but was eventually subdued in a combination effort between the New Rochelle and Mount Vernon police departments.
Assistant District Attorney Nadine Nagler of the Superior Court Trial Division prosecuted the case.
