Emmanuel Lathourakis has been charged with first-degree criminal impersonation for allegedly entering a West Third Street apartment on Nov. 26 after an 8-year-old boy let him in when he claimed to be a narcotics officer there on “official business.”

According to police, the man looked around the apartment for several minutes before leaving without taking anything after the homeowner asked to see his badge and identification. Lathourakis faces up to four years in prison for impersonating a police officer.

In a statement, Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas praised his police force for the swift and effective investigation into the home invasion.

“I’m proud that the Mount Vernon Police Department for their investigation and arrest of this individual,” he stated. “This arrest was possible thanks to video surveillance and diligent police work.”
