Fire Rips Through Mount Vernon Apartment Building

Updated at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13 : MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Several residents of a Mount Vernon apartment building were driven into the streets Thursday night when flames ripped through a third-floor residence.

Mount Vernon firefighters brought two people out of the burning building on stretchers, residents told The Mount Vernon Daily Voice. Firefighters would not comment.

The three-alarm fire broke out in the five-story brick building at 40 E. Birch St. shortly after 7:30 p.m. Firefighters had the flames knocked down and under control by about 9 p.m.

By 9:15 p.m., firefighters were picking their way through the building, checking for hot spots and surveying water damage.

It was not known whether residents would be able to return to their homes for the night.

East Birch Street was closed from Westchester Avenue to Gramatan Avenue while firefighters remained on the scene.
