MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Twelve people were displaced Sunday afternoon from a multi-family house in Mount Vernon after a fire ripped through the top portion of the home, Deputy Fire Chief John Battista said.

The fire started in a rear bedroom, moved through two bedrooms and burned parts of the roof, Battista said. Most of the house, at 209 South Fifth Ave., is salvageable, with most of the damage at the top of the home, he said.

The displaced residents may be taken to a hotel or receive assistance elsewhere, he said.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation and there were no injuries.

There were five Mount Vernon fire trucks and two EMS crews on scene around 12:50 p.m. A Mount Vernon police car blocked off the intersection of South Fifth Avenue and West Fourth Street while firefighters worked.
