"Special agents bring with them a variety of experience and skills, from computer science and engineering to law and accounting," the FBI advertisement says.

They're also a select bunch.

During fiscal 2014, the bureau said, it received more than 20,000 applications for approximately 700 special agent vacancies.

Applicants must successfully complete the Special Agent Selection System (SASS), described as a "mentally and physically challenging process designed to identify the most capable candidates."

It includes an online application to screen for eligibility and willingness, followed by a number of exams, interviews, and background evaluations.

Applicants are rated on "individual competitiveness and the professional needs of the FBI," the bureau says.

The process can take six months to a year.

Requirements:

• U.S. citizen

• Between 23 and 36 years old

• Bachelor’s degree

• At least three years of full-time work experience

• Lived in the U.S. or its territories for three of the last five years.
