Authorities Seek Missing Mount Vernon Man With Mental Health Disorders

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. - The New York State Office of Public Safety is seeking the community’s help to drum up additional leads as they search for a missing homeless man suffering from mental health disorders that was last seen in Mount Vernon in November.

On Monday, the Office of Public Safety announced that 49-year-old James Murphy, who has schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder, has been missing since Nov. 30. He was last seen in the area of Union Avenue and Third Street in Mount Vernon.

According to the Office of Public Safety, Murphy was last seen wearing brown sneakers, a striped shirt and blue jeans.

Anyone with information about Murphy’s whereabouts can contact the Mount Vernon Police Department at (914) 665-2500, or the state Missing Persons Clearinghouse at 1-800-346-3543. Leads can also be emailed to missingpersons@dcjs.ny.gov.

The Missing Persons Clearinghouse, which is located within the state’s Division of Criminal Justice Services, publicizes cases involving missing children, college students and vulnerable adults. Each Monday, they focus on a different case in an effort to help authorities generate new leads.
