WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- An arrest has been made in the fatal shooting of 13-year-old rising basketball star Shamoya McKenzie, according to officials with the Mount Vernon Mayor's Office.

Maria Donovan, the spokeswoman for Mayor Richard Thomas, confirmed that there has been an arrest. Further information is expected to be released Tuesday.

The mayor made the announcement to members of Grace Baptist Church Monday morning during a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event.

McKenzie was killed around 2:30 p.m. New Year's Eve Day when she was struck in the head by a stray bullet while a passenger in a near the intersection of Chestnut Place and 3rd Street, police said.

According to police, McKenzie was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead. A second victim was also struck in the shooting, suffering non-life threatening injuries.

A star for both the Mount Vernon Junior Knights, Lady Elites and the High School JV Lady Knights, McKenzie had dreams of attending the University of Connecticut to play under coach Geno Auriemma before making her way to the WNBA.

Funeral services for McKenzie were held last week at Macedonia Baptist Church on Ninth Avenue. She was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Greenburgh.

Family and friends have set up a GoFundMe fundraising page that has so far raised more than $30,000. Several local basketball programs have also pledged to raise money to help the family.
