Sr. Margaret Mary Burns, 74, Of Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. - Sr. Margaret Mary Burns of Mount Vernon died Dec. 16. She was 74.

Sr. Burns was born Sept. 14, 1939, in Beacon, to Kenneth and Madelyn (Blackburn) Burns. She was a graduate of Beacon High School class of 1958. She attended St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Poughkeepsie and received her diploma in 1961. In 1973 she received her BSN from Seton Hall University and in 1987 she graduated from Rutgers University with a Masters in Gero-Psychiatric Nursing. Her work ministry took her to St. Elizabeth Hospital Mission of the Immaculate Virgin in Staten Island, St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie, Immaculate Conception Mother House in Hastings on Hudson and the Westchester Visiting Nurses in White Plains. Sr. Margaret also held many community positions with the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities.

Sr. Burns is survived by her sisters, Ellen DerBoghossian (John), Sandra McCluskey (Gerard); brother, Thomas Burns (Rose); and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are Friday, Dec. 20 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Westchester Funeral Home, Inc., 190 Main St., Eastchester, NY 10709. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21 at St. Joachim Church, Beacon. Interment to follow at St. Joachim Cemetery Beacon.
