Sister Virginia Hanrahan, 78, Of Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. - Sister Virginia Hanrahan, OP of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, Ossining, died March 21. She was 78.

Sr. Hanrahan was born June 23, 1935, in Woodside; she was the daughter of Joseph and Catharine (O'Neill) Hanrahan.

Sister Hanrahan entered the novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor in Sept. 1953, made her first profession in March, 1955, and final profession in March, 1958. She earned her BS in Nursing (cum laude) from Hunter College City University of New York; her MS in Nursing from Catholic University, Washington, DC, where she was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society. An honorary doctor of Humane Letters was awarded from the College of New Rochelle.

She served as community health nurse with the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor in the Bronx from 1961 to 63. She was assistant supervisor of the Home Health Agency from 1965 to 67. In 1967, she became a team nurse at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Neighborhood Health Center in the Bronx. From 1968 to 73, she was director of Nursing at MLK.

From 1994 until retirement in 2009, she was president and chief executive officer of Dominican Sisters Family Health Service. From 1973 to 94, she served as executive director of this visiting nurse service.

Sr. Hanrahan is survived by three sisters; a brother; several nieces and nephews; and sisters in the Dominican Sisters of Hope. She was predeceased by her parents.

Calling hours are Wednesday, March 26 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Ossining Center of Hope/Mariandale Retreat and Conference Center in the Evergreen Room on the ground floor. There will be a wake service at 7 p.m. in the Evergreen Room. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Thursday, March 27 at 10 a.m. in the chapel at Mariandale and burial will follow in the sisters' cemetery.
