MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. ? Sister Mary Eucharista Johnson, of Mount Vernon, died March 1. She was 78.
Johnson was born Marlene Leocadia Johnson on Nov. 19, 1934, to Haskell and Sophia (Ruth) Johnson in Baltimore. She received a bachelor's in theology at St. Joseph's College in Collegeville, Ind., in 1973, and a master's in theology from St. Bonaventure University in New York in 1980.
She was a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities. She was originally with the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for two years. She was a teacher and principal in the Syracuse area and in Mattydale and Baldwinsville, N.Y., a pastoral/parish minister in Camden, N.J., and a parish associate in Glassboro, N.J. Besides being a teacher and principal, in her later years she counseled and led groups for the bereaved and divorced.
She is survived by two nieces, Jean (David) Stratmyer and Diane Blake. She was predeceased by her brothers, Thomas and Buddy Johnson.
Calling hours will be held Monday, March 4, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at The Westchester Funeral Home, Inc. in Eastchester. A Mass will be held Tuesday, March 5, at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Name of Jesus Church, New Rochelle. Burial will be Wednesday, March 6, in Assumption Cemetery in Syracuse.
