Mary Ellen O’Rourke, 87, Former Mount Vernon Resident

BREWSTER, N.Y. - Mary Ellen O’Rourke of Brewster, formerly of Mount Vernon, died Wednesday, June 25. She was 87.

O’Rourke was born Feb. 14, 1927, in Wilmington, Del., to Lea J. and Mary Ellen (Churnside) Kirk. She graduated from Pierre S. Dupont High School in Wilmington and Wesley College in Dover, Del. She worked for the Town of Southeast Recreation Dept. for many years. She had been a school bus driver with the Brewster Central School District. She was a cashier for Helen & Ed’s grocery store, later becoming Kobackers Supermarket. She was a 57 year resident of Brewster. She previously lived in  Mt. Vernon.

O’Rourke is survived by her daughter, Mary Ellen Durkin of Dover Plains; sons, Francis X. O’Rourke of Sherman, Conn., John C. O’Rourke (Valerie) of Brewster and Timothy K. O’Rourke (Lisa) of Wappingers Falls; brother, William Kirk of Wilmington, Del.; nine grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Francis X. O’Rourke; brothers, Francis and Martin; and daughter-in-law, Annette O’Rourke.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, June 30 at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church in Brewster. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in O’Rourke’s memory may be made to Hudson Valley Hospice, 374 Violet Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
