Jean Thomas, 86, Former Mount Vernon Nurse's Aide

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Jean G. Thomas, a former Mount Vernon nurse’s aide, died Jan. 11 in Humble, Texas. She was 86.

Thomas was born Sept. 15, 1926, in Pittsburgh to Hillard Guthrie and May Lee. Her family later moved to Washington, D.C., where she was raised and educated. She married Francis Thomas and moved to New York.

She worked as a nurse's aide at Mount Vernon Hospital's maternity ward for more than 30 years until her retirement in 1988. Thomas also worked as the head registrar for the Mount Vernon Neighborhood Health Center from its start in 1971 until her retirement in 1991, when she moved to Humble.

Thomas is survived by four sons, Stanley (Caroline), of Bronx, N.Y., Girard, of Chino Hills, Calif., Bruce (Maria), of Chester, N.Y., and Det. Mark Thomas, of Mount Vernon; three sisters, Gloria Turner, of Long Island, N.Y., Barbara Norris, of Washington, D.C., and Betty Balthrop, of Maryland; a brother, Stanley Guthrie, of East Orange, N.J.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband; three sons, Charles, Francis Jr., and Paul; two sisters, Elaine and Doris; and a brother, Hillard Jr.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Lee O. Wood Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
