James Murphy, 78, Former Mount Vernon Detective

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – James F. Murphy Jr., a former Mount Vernon detective, died Jan. 27. He was 78.

Murphy graduated from Edison High School and served in the Marine Corps. He was a member of the Mount Vernon Police Department, where his father, James Sr., was also a member.

Upon his retirement as a detective in 1985, Murphy moved to Florida. He was most recently of Melbourne, Fla.

He was predeceased by his parents, James F. Murphy Sr. and Catherine L. Murphy; his wife of 17 years, June; two daughters, Lorraine Mangeri and Elaine Murphy; and a sister, Mary Nuzzi. 

Murphy is survived by two sons, James F. Murphy III, of Geneseo, N.Y., and Michael Patrick Murphy, of Eastchester; a daughter, RoseAnn (Michael) Gates, of Rochester, N.Y.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by three sisters, Loretta (Gino) Iafolla, of Bronx, N.Y., Eileen (Alex) DiVernieri and Kathie Lentini (Mani) Salmon, both of Lake Carmel, N.Y.; a brother-in-law, Dominick Nuzzi, of Melbourne, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

There are no services planned at this time. Florida Memorial Funeral Home in Rockledge, Fla., is handling arrangements.
