HARTSDALE, N.Y. -- Jacqueline Osborne Wicha, a Hartsdale resident and a Mount Vernon native, died Monday, Sept. 28. She was 92.
She lived in Hartsdale for 61 years with her husband, Peter Wicha, until his death in 2010.
Wicha was born in Mount Vernon and graduated with honors from the College of New Rochelle with a degree in chemistry in 1946.
In 1943, during World War II, she was recruited as one of an elite group of 918 female college students from across the United States, women identified as mathematically advanced, who took courses in aerodynamics, engineering and design at seven top universities. Trained to design airplanes, 766 cadettes graduated from the program and began work in five Curtiss-Wright plants, replacing male engineers who had left to support the war effort. Wicha graduated from the program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and was assigned to the propeller division at Curtiss-Wright in New Jersey.
She is survived by her children, Anne, Peter and Paul.
