Inez Clayton, 89, Longtime Mount Vernon Resident

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Inez Ella Clayton of Mount Vernon died Dec. 22. She was 89.

Born in Atlanta in 1923, she was the second child of Carrie and Timothy Clayton. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Harlem, where they became involved in the Canaan Baptist Church and its 112th street community.

Clayton worked for Western Electric Company and later Lucent Technologies, from where she retired after 40 years. She traveled from Harlem to central New Jersey daily. In 1970, she purchased a home in Mount Vernon, which became the hub for all of the Claytons for the next 40 years, her family said.

A proud hostess to family and friends, she enjoyed cooking and baking for Sunday dinners and block association events. She also liked to keep up with current events, sports and the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Clayton was predeceased by her parents, Carrie and Timothy Clayton; and two sisters, Hazel Jones and Anna Glenn. She is survived by a son, Philip Timothy Clayton; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; a nephew and a niece.

Services will be Saturday at McCall Funeral Home in the Bronx. Viewing will begin at 10 a.m. and services will begin at 11:30 a.m.. Burial will immediately follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.
