Dr. Arturo Colon Modesto, M.D., 86, Of Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. - Arturo Colon Modesto, M.D. of Mount Vernon died April 1. He was 86.

Dr. Modesto was born Feb. 15, 1928, in New York City, to Arturo Modesto and Cecelia Colon Modesto. He graduated valedictorian of his class at Evander Childs High School in the Bronx. He later attended the City College of New York and graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. He went on to receive his medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine as part of the university's second graduating class. A native New Yorker, he was a resident of the Bronx and  Mount Vernon for over 30 years, and of Apopka, Fla. for the last 12 years.

After medical school, he served as a general medical officer and captain in the United States Army (1957 to 1958) and was stationed in Augsburg, Germany. He did his residency in obstetrics and gynecology and his fellowship in infertility. He shared his expertise as an associate professor of Medicine at both New York Medical College in Valhalla and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in the Bronx.

Dr. Modesto is survived by his sister, Elsie Gil De Rubio; children, Victor L. Modesto, M.D., Elba I. Gale, Raul A. Modesto, Arturo F. Modesto, and Cristobal V. Modesto-Fulton; daughters-in-law, Marianne Derby Modesto, Amy Basulto Modesto, and Janet Martinez Modesto; sons-in-law, David W. Gale, M.D., Kenneth Huffman, Christopher M. Modesto-Fulton; 10 grandchildren; many nephews, nieces; and grandnephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Eddy Padilla Modesto; daughter, Cecilia Modesto Huffman; brother, The Honorable Judge Carlos Felipe Modesto; and niece, Dorian C. Stitch.

Dr. Modesto will be laid to rest at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 12 at Woodlawn Cemetery in New York City.
