Barbara R. Miller, 79, Former Mount Vernon Resident

OSSINING, N.Y. – Barbara R. Miller, a longtime resident of Ossining, died Friday, June 17 at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow. She was 79.

She was born May 3, 1937, in Yonkers, to Charles Ransom and Helen Trumpi Ransom. 

She was educated in Mount Vernon and graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1953. On March 13, 1955, she married Herbert L. Miller at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Mount Vernon. She was a housewife and lived in Ossining for the past 60 years. Before that, she lived in Mount Vernon. She also was a life member of the Ossining Woman's Club. Although she lost her eyesight early in life, as well as her hearing, she was a master at cards and loved playing bridge with her close friends. She also had a passion for listening to books on tape.

She is survived by her son, Drew Miller (RoseMarie); granddaughter, Nicole, of Yorktown Heights; daughter, Robin Ruhe (Steve) of Merritt Island, Fl;. grandson, Michael Hongach (Jennifer)and great-grandchildren, Trenton and Nicole, all of Cocoa, Fla.; granddaughter, Jamie Hongach, of Ossining; sister, Betty Anne Valenti; and brother Charles Ransom, of Fishkill.

She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert L. Miller, in 2003; and son, Harley Miller, in 1968.

Calling hours will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Hawthorne Funeral Home, 21 W. Stevens Ave., Hawthorne. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at St. Augustine's Cemetery in Ossining.
