YONKERS, N.Y. -- Yonkers resident Mario Garcia-Sura pleaded guilty on Tuesday to singular counts of aggravated vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated, which resulted in the death of 19-year-old Sreeraj Chandran, the District Attorney's office announced.
Garcia-Sura, 49, who resides at 77 Locust Hill Avenue, originally faced nine charges: one count of aggravated vehicular homicide, two counts of second-degree vehicular manslaughter, one count of criminally negligent homicide, two counts of driving while intoxicated, one count of reckless driving and two counts of speeding.
His original expected sentenced of a maximum of 25 years in state prison has been reduced to a maximum of 10.
Garcia-Sura was driving his convertible down Riverdale Avenue on the evening of Oct. 20, 2013 with a friend after consuming multiple alcoholic beverages.
According to the District Attorney's office, at about 5:13 p.m., Garcia-Sura was driving at a high speed through an intersection before colliding with a 2004 gold Hyundai Sonata operated by Chandran.
Chandran was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead at approximately 6:12 p.m.
The defendant’s passenger was taken to Jacobi Medical Center where he was admitted for severe injuries to his lower body.
According to the District Attorney, sentencing will be on June 10. Assistant District Attorney Kristina Dushaj, of the Superior Court Trail Division, is prosecuting the case.
