While driving home after visiting their daughter in Bergen County, Bassam Sayegh and his wife Randa said the first gate never came down when they drove through a crossing in Elmwood Park, N.J., and their car was hit by a New Jersey Transit train bound for Rockland, according to the report.
Bassam Sayegh was thrown 30 feet, knocked unconscious and suffered a leg injury that required 60 stitches, according to the report.
"The engineer observed the vehicle going around the safety gates onto the tracks as he approached this grade crossing and immediately applied the emergency brakes before striking the vehicle," the New Jersey Transit said in a statement.
