Wendy Rosenbach of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said they have not received any reporters of the moose since Tuesday, July 12, shortly after Daily Voice first reported the moose was spotted alongside the Bear Mountain Parkway on the Cortlandt/Peekskill border.

"The moose has most likely moved out of the area," Rosenbach said.

The moose, described as being 7-feet and weighing 800 to 900 pounds, appeared to be heading north when spotted near the Mountain Mountain Parkway because the moose had earlier been spotted in Ossining, Bedford and Millwood.

Moose sightings are extremely rare in southern New York. There are only an estimated 800 moose in the state, with most located far upstate near the Canadian and Vermont borders.
