Squirrel Causes Power Outage In Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – A squirrel was zapped and killed by a power line on Friday morning causing 313 customers in Mount Vernon to lose power for about two hours.

Con Edison spokesman Allan Drury said that the squirrel was either on the line or in the transformer when it was killed, causing a power outage at 6:57 a.m. on North Ninth Avenue by West Sidney Avenue. Drury said that crews were on the scene within minutes and restored all power to the neighborhood by 9 a.m.

“It’s not all that unusual for a squirrel to cause a power outage,” Drury said. “It happens every now and then.”
