MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Mount Vernon has been named among the country’s fastest growing cities, by NerdWallet, a financial literacy and consumer advocacy website.
NerdWallet searched for America’s fastest-growing cities, factoring population, employment and income growth. The site crunched the numbers from nearly 500 cities, and concluded that Mount Vernon was the sixth-fastest growing city in the country.
Between 2007 and 2011, the population in Mount Vernon grew by 4.2 percent, while the employment rate rose 7.4 percent and the median income was increased by 4.4 percent.
Mount Vernon’s overall growth score of 65.1 percent was bested only by Odessa, Texas (65.1); Fayetteville, N.C. (67.5); Fargo, N.D. (67.8); Gainesville, Fla. (75.8) and a still rebuilding New Orleans (82.9) – which was bolstered by a 45.5 percent population growth.
NerdWallet praised Mount Vernon’s growth in healthcare and education in its study.
“The 115 year old Mount Vernon Hospital contributes to the thriving healthcare industry in the city,” it said. “Mount Vernon is an extremely diverse community, with residents from over 98 nationalities. The city also has a large Brazilian community.”
