A proposed amendment to the Article IV, Section 234 of the City Code (Tax Abatement for Rental Property Occupied by Senior Citizens) has been provided to the council for consideration. If approved, the ordinance would raise the household income eligibility limit for senior citizens from $29,000 to $40,000 under the Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (“SCRIE”) program.

The council is authorized pursuant to Real Property Tax Law, Section 467-b to enact legislation to amend tax abatement eligibility requirements up to the maximum statutory limit provided. Accordingly, the comptroller has recommended legislation be enacted to increase the household income eligibility limit to $40,000.
